Readers will recall that a constitutional amendment has recently been proposed by Southern Seminary President Albert Mohler for the Southern Baptist Convention that would rule out female pastors in churches affiliated with the Convention.
William Wolfe is reporting elsewhere that the Executive Director of the NC Baptist State Convention– Todd Unzicker— has been part of efforts to organize against the passage of this amendment. Wolfe suggests that Unzicker and JD Greear are aligned in this effort. The state convention’s website indicates that Unzicker worked for Greear’s Summit Church in Durham prior to working for the state convention.
Wolfe also reports that the North American Mission Board leadership is working against the proposed amendment to rule out female pastors.
In any event, the tithing dollars of southern Baptists in North Carolina– that subsidize the state convention and the North American Mission Board– are supporting efforts to continue to allow female pastors.
Addendum: It should be noted that the Baptist State Convention took no notable action when former Governor Roy Cooper shut down our churches for an extended period during Covid. It was the obvious party to challenge Cooper in court, but it did not happen. Instead, it was INDEPENDENT Baptists who filed suit in federal court and won.
Close your purses, Brethren.
That’s right, Fred, except for one thing. If one gives to your local church– the church where you have membership– if it’s a Southern Baptist church, part of that money will likely (and ultimately) reach the state convention and the North American Mission Board.
Nothing good can come from anything that is touched by JD Greear.
On matters related to the Convention, Fred, that is absolutely true. His influence has been disastrous.
