  1. Ashville has been a petri dish for leftwing hippies, since about the 1980’s.

    It’s reputation as a liberal and progressive bastion accelerated significantly in the 1980s when local coalitions and grassroots organizers began mobilizing against corporate mall developments and conservative policies. Today, this political culture is embodied by active progressive and labor organizations like the Asheville chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

    The influx of these progressive and socialist movements into a historically conservative, rural Appalachian region has generated ongoing political debate and varying sentiments.

    I don’t fear those hippies and other fringe socialists groups.
