I received today the following e-mail from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA):
On Feb. 27, 2025, the United States took custody of 29 defendants from Mexico who face charges relating to racketeering, drug-trafficking, murder, illegal use of firearms, money laundering, and other crimes. Among them was Rafael Caro Quintero, who is alleged to have been among those responsible for the 1985 brutal torture and murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena and others. Special Agent Camarena… was investigating a multi-billion-dollar drug pipeline when he was kidnapped and killed. DEA honors his memory every day. Every year, more than 80 million youth and adults stand together to celebrate Red Ribbon Week to honor the sacrifices made by Kiki Camarena and others on behalf of all Americans. On Feb. 28, 2025, DEA Headquarters staff wore red in remembrance of the man who made the ultimate sacrifice. |
Defendants taken into U.S. custody include leaders and managers of drug cartels recently designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists, such as the Sinaloa Cartel, Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), Cártel del Noreste (formerly Los Zetas), La Nueva Familia Michoacana, and Cártel de Golfo (Gulf Cartel). The defendants collectively are alleged to have been responsible for the importation into the United States of massive quantities of poison, including cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and heroin, as well as associated acts of violence.
