During recent times, we have become more aware of instances when judges have done the wrong thing on criminal cases here in NC. They have allowed dangerous criminals to be released to commit heinous crimes repeatedly.
This has particularly been a problem in Charlotte; but it is potentially a problem in other metro areas and statewide.
Now, the General Assembly has passed a bill allowing the Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court to suspend judges from hearing cases and withhold their pay. It also would allow the entire Supreme Court to override the state’s Judicial Standards Commission when it performs investigations.
It will be interesting to see if Governor Josh Stein signs this bill. Somehow, I doubt it given Republicans control the Supreme Court.
The Republicans in Raleigh have spent considerable time and effort diverting authority toward their own office-holders. That might be good for now. But when the socialists regain control of these positions, they will likely exploit that authority toward nefarious ends.
Nonetheless, I would certainly appreciate having Chief Justice Paul Newby and his Republican colleagues on the Supreme Court in a position of greater authority over negligent judges, at least for now.
