They were trying to protect us from some imaginary characteristics they represented would cause massive harm. In fact, Trump is not perfect, and some of his decisions have been mistaken. However, these mistakes are in completely different areas than whatever the media was trying to gaslight.
Of course, the legacy media is an instrument of the democratic socialist party:
