Were we to get a do-over, I’d vote for a Constitutional Amendment creating a wall of separation between govt and education. Really the last thing we want the govt doing is messing with the minds of our children.
Envisage how different education would be today had we done that in 1790. It would be rich and varied and responsive and accountable in ways that exceed anyone’s imagination. Nobody would have $100,000 student debt for a gender studies degree (because no one would lend them money for that). And teachers doing the stuff above would be fired immediately, if not prosecuted.
It is interesting that some conditions or problems have arisen that the Founders (or the drafters of constitutional language) would have had no reason to foresee. I can think of at least several of these. An amendment of the type you mention would have been wonderful.

Some great points, J. Sobran.
