During the Obama administration, the United States had been fundamentally transformed into a place where a two-term president can get a third term under a barely cognizant president like Joe Biden. His Pétain presidency will doubtless be repeated under the next Democrat who gets the keys to the White House, but there’s more to the transformation.
Obamacare, which Garrow called “in large part, a fraud,” was a step toward a nation in which you get only what the government wants you to have. POTUS44 also decoupled terrorism from Islam and turned the FBI, CIA, and Department of Homeland Security into a palace guard working against his domestic opposition. This transformed Americans who have a disposition to distrust government and value their constitutional rights into “right-wing extremists” and even “domestic terrorists” in the estimation of Democrats. The fallout continues to this day.
