Property Taxes and Corrupt Local Government: Good Solutions and Bad Solutions

Within the last 24 hours, we have learned about two different initiatives to deal with property taxes. Skyrocketing property valuations and corrupt, greedy units of local government have brought this issue to the forefront.

It was announced yesterday that Phil Berger is convening a special committee in the NC Senate to deal with this issue. The General Assembly has already taken several actions that will be helpful.

This morning, the News and Record published a piece instigated by a progressive/ socialist think tank– Carolina Forward– advocating for increased property taxes on businesses and commercial properties in order to keep property taxes lower for homeowners.

Of course, that is a BAD solution. It is a variation on a tax-the-rich scheme– except in many cases the businesses and owners of commercial property are not necessarily wealthy. Many will be small businesses. The News and Record/ Carolina Forward proposal would help create an anti-business environment that would ultimately reduce jobs and regional prosperity. It will also increase prices for consumers. (I know that businesses already pay higher utility rates in North Carolina than homeowners.)

It is interesting that the News and Record and Carolina Forward do not mention reduced spending by local government as a solution. Par for the course.
