Readers might be aware it was recently proved that thousands of illegal immigrants were registered to vote in New Jersey because of its “motor voter” procedures. Some states enable those getting a driver’s license at the DMV to simultaneously register to vote.
This relies upon the DMV and election boards to assure the people registering are United States citizens. Of course, it is very questionable that they do so.
Here in North Carolina, illegals are not supposed to be granted driver’s licenses. However, two other groups of non-citizens are eligible for driver’s licenses. That includes those here on Temporary Protected Status (or refugees); and those who are regarded as lawful residents, for instance because of work visas.
Errors or malevolent disregard of the law could lead DMV or Board of Elections employees to allow non-citizens to register to vote such as those from these two large groups.
Is anyone reviewing or auditing these registrations and voter rolls to assure that these two groups are being handled correctly? If so, great. But if not, we have a problem.
TC, are you suggesting that NC has a serious problem? Who then can fix it ?
Fred, I don’t know if North Carolina has a problem. I just know how these things tend to go.
Who can fix it? The Republicans now control the Boards of Elections statewide; and they can fix it if a problem is determined to exist.
