Brad Briner has now been in office over a year.
Recall how former state treasurer Dale Folwell exposed how the state’s hospital systems were gouging North Carolina taxpayers using the State Health Plan for teachers and governmental employees. When Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC refused to turn over its data on this situation, he took the State Health Plan business away from them.
Now, Briner is giving the contract back to Blue Cross. In addition, he is giving a couple of favored hospital systems– Novant and UNC Health– privileged contracts under the State Health Plan.
Somehow, I smell a stink.
