  1. The electoral college is vitally important to Americas well being for someof the following reasons:

Balances Power Between Large and Small States.

    Promotes a Two-Party System.

    Prevents Regional Candidates From Dominating.

    AND

The Electoral College has been in use for over 200 years and has produced a peaceful transition of power through many elections. The system is familiar, and changing it could lead to confusion or unintended consequences.

  2. All Dr. Newcomb’s points are excellent. It is worth adding that the US was originated as a federation of semi-autonomous States (not provinces) who joined voluntarily, with a federal rather than a national government. The Electoral College reflects that. The people who conspired behind locked doors in the hot summer of 1787 in Philadelphia were largely in agreement that democracy was a danger (1776-1787 suffered from all manner of democratic excess) to be restrained.

    1. I hope, J. Sobran, that the effort for the interstate compact to direct electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote will be overturned by the Supreme Court when it is challenged.
