Local Baptist Pastor Rationalizes Teachers Laying Off Work

Rev. Alan Sherouse is the pastor of a liberal local Baptist church– i.e., First Baptist in Greensboro. He also happens to serve on Guilford County’s school board. He was elected a number of years ago.

The school board voted yesterday to close the schools on Friday, May 1. Why? Teachers are going to protest in Raleigh the fact we have not had a state budget. They are also protesting charter schools. Their grievance is that failing to pass a budget means they do not get the raises they covet. There is also a desire for more education funding in general.

In any event, Sherouse said the following at the school board meeting:

“Any harm and inconvenience on Friday, May 1 is caused not by this board, nor by these teachers, but by those that control 60% of our funding in Raleigh,” responded board member the Rev. Alan Sherouse, who made the motion and had been at a similar rally in Raleigh in 2019 on education issues.

In other words, a “minister of the gospel” rationalizes people flouting their responsibilities because they are not getting the additional money they think they deserve. He rationalizes his own abdication of responsibility and that of the board. He deflects the responsibility to other parties.

This is an example of the type of person our local citizens elect in school board elections.
