My Irish line came to America ~1650 as a slave, sold into slavery/indenture by the deeply Christian and ruthless Oliver Cromwell–brutally suppressing resistance in Ireland. (Daniel Defoe equated slavery and indentured, as most indentured did not live out the end of the term of indenture; slaves were better fed and clothed usually because a more long-term investment.) Being cognizant of what our ancestors went through should leaven the depressing nature of our present travails.
