Beating The Drum For Government Building A Pro Hockey Rink In Greensboro

I could scarcely believe it.

The Rhino Times had an article yesterday about the fact that professional hockey is coming back to Greensboro. That is a good thing. I remember going to the games during the 1990’s at the Greensboro Coliseum when we had a “minor league” hockey franchise.

What is the problem?

There is an effort on the Guilford Board of County Commissioners to build a new facility for the team instead of using the Greensboro Coliseum. In addition, it is a REPUBLICAN who is beating the drum for this effort. The rationale is that the facility could be a money-maker for local government.

Unbelievable. The coliseum used to be a perfectly adequate venue for professional hockey. Why hit up the taxpayers for more capital expense? The default position always seems to be that local government must build, own and run these facilities.

It never ends.

  1. Not a hockey fan , myself, but it does seem foolish not to use the coliseum if Greensboro does get a pro hockey team.

    1. Absolutely. They try to make it seem like it is such a huge inconvenience and expense to enable the coliseum to host hockey games. Arenas all over the country do it– and I would bet few of them are solely dedicated to hockey. And of course, we did it here years ago.
