He earned his medical degree at the former Medical College of Virginia (now VCU School of Medicine) in Richmond. He earned a Master's of Public Health at the USC School of Public Health. He has been practicing medicine for more than 30 years. He is a member of Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro.
