This was a dramatic moment. The new president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Willy Rice, was to speak before the denomination’s executive committee for the first time. This body is largely composed of folks appointed by former presidents such as JD Greear and those within his orbit. They have been part of the corrupted status quo and will not necessarily be amenable to a reformer’s message.
Rice spoke with clarity and vision. He laid out five priority areas:
- Work on the sexual abuse issue
- Restricting the office of pastor to males only
- A new article to be added to the Baptist Faith and Message addressing marriage and gender
- Greater financial transparency for denominational entities
- A Great Commission initiative to reach every American with the gospel and all “people groups” worldwide
