There has been a string of violent incidents in the city of Greensboro during recent weeks. One of these was a particularly high profile incident downtown.
The city tends to respond much more quickly when bad things happen downtown. The City Manager, Trey Davis, is trying to make it appear that they are trying to improve upon the city’s performance with crime control:
Davis said he is working with Greensboro Police Chief Kamran Afzal on short-term and long-term responses to the recent violence in the city.
“We are not creating another permanent unit or adding another layer of bureaucracy. We are bringing the capabilities we already have together around a clearer citywide strategy,” Davis said. “Chief Afzal is directing GPD to strengthen coordination among patrol, investigations, crime-gun intelligence, violent-offender enforcement and other specialized resources.”
The approach taken will be driven by what the city learns from the latest efforts, according to Davis.
“We do not need the same police response everywhere in Greensboro,” Davis said. “We need the right response where there is a demonstrated problem, focused on the individuals, locations and circumstances associated with violence. At the same time, people throughout Greensboro should know that their safety matters and that the City will respond when they need us.”
It is all kabuki theater, of course. They don’t want low crime rates because they don’t want strong policing.
