In Vitro Fertilization Primer

Family North Carolina magazine has an excellent article by Katy Faust on the topic of in vitro fertilization. Check it out.

The bill I discussed yesterday that was introduced in the NC General Assembly would criminalize all those who participate in the process of in vitro fertilization. Once again, given the fact that Republican legislative leaders in Raleigh have already compromised severely on the issue of life, it is extremely unlikely they will allow this bill to gain traction.

  1. Some lawmakers oppose IVFs because the process typically involves creating multiple embryos to ensure a successful pregnancy, unused embryos are often frozen, donated for medical research, or discarded. Lawmakers who oppose the procedure argue that discarding or destroying these embryos is morally equivalent to abortion.

I understand that argument. I also have heard that IVFs take an emotional and physical toll on the woman.

However, I understand that Republicans, including Trump, argue for the importance of supporting the treatments, emphasizing that they are pro-life and pro-family, according to a person familiar with the calls.

Two years ago Senate Republicans blocked legislation that would protect access to in vitro fertilization.

In fact Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, one of the more vocal opponents of abortion in the Senate, said he supports IVF and believes it is “entirely life affirming.” Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall, a former obstetrician, said he’d referred patients for IVF treatments for 25 years in his practice. “We are the pro-family party, and there’s nothing more pro-family than helping couples have a baby,” Marshall said.

It is obviously a contentious issue.
