Regional conservative media was abuzz this week with the revelation that the Trump Administration is highlighting our state’s allowing foreigners to obtain illegally a license to drive trucks.
The states implement the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) process. The federal government is involved because these truckers often use interstate highways and other U.S. highways.
Sean Duffy, the Transportation Secretary, is basically threatening the state of North Carolina over this matter. He says over 50% of CDL’s issued to foreigners in the state are issued illegally. Certain federal funds may be withheld from North Carolina if the state doesn’t fix the problem.
It is interesting that the federal government requires truckers to be fluent in English. I have had the opportunity to perform physical examinations for truck drivers for more than 35 years. I can attest to the fact that some of the foreign drivers going through this process don’t know English well. In my experience, that happens only on a very occasional basis.
Socialists have controlled our state DMV for many years. It appears, however, that Governor Stein is going to need to clean up his act.
