A couple of interesting articles caught my attention regarding elections in North Carolina. It should be noted that Republicans took control of the state Board of Elections and the County Boards of Elections within the last year.
Guilford County elections board chair Eugene Lester was running a meeting during which he asserted that voting is a privilege– not a right. He made this statement after leftist agitators showed up in force demanding early voting sites at state universities and in certain black areas.
Strictly speaking, the Constitution does not explicitly state there is a right to vote. It only says that voting rights (presumably enacted by statute) cannot be taken away on the basis of certain protected characteristics– race, sex, etc.
But it is an absolute canard to suggest there is an affirmative right to early voting sites. (I am among those who believe we ought to get rid of early voting completely.)
The second article details how the state Board of Elections is going to scrutinize the voting rolls to assure that non-citizens are not voting. This is a great idea although it might be a much more complex task than it might appear to be. Nonetheless, we ought to celebrate that this task is being undertaken.
Previous generations of Republicans had ceded huge amounts of territory to the socialists on matters related to elections. I am glad we are taking back some of that territory.
Kudos to the Elections Board. Voter ID will deter those not eligible from voting.
Also mail in ballots should be eliminated except for those physically unable to get to the polling location.
Dead voters should be scrubbed from the rolls.
Integrity of the voter rolls is vital to a free and fair election process.
I agree, Fred. We at last have the potential in NC to fix some things…
