The socialists ran the table last night. None of these races were particularly close with one exception.
What happened? The Republicans’ “ground game” was lacking, whereas the socialists’ ground game was exceptional. There was a lackluster gubernatorial candidate in Virginia. Similarly, there was a weak, divided field opposing Mamdani in New York.
Although Mamdani will ruin New York even further if he is able to implement his program, he ran an excellent campaign. His media skills are very good. He will now, at least for a time, be the de facto leader of the Democratic Party nationwide. The ardent Marxists will gain a greater foothold in the party, and will attempt to replicate what he has done nationwide. Note the fact that we had major Marxist gains here in Greensboro on our city council. They are very organized, and very determined.
It should be noted that Mamdani is very young and inexperienced; and will be at risk of making huge mistakes.
The results in Virginia are shameful. The people of the Commonwealth elected a Muslim to its lieutenant governor position. They elected to the office of state Attorney General a man who had expressed a desire to kill his opponent and also his opponent’s children. He will be the highest ranking law enforcement officer in the state. The people of the state of Virginia have descended into the abyss.
How do we interpret this?
Certainly, it is to be expected that the party that loses power in a presidential election will often come back shortly afterward as its people want to reverse what is happening. The prideful statements in conservative media predicting the impending death of the Democratic Party were profoundly foolish.
The Republicans need to be more consistent with their get-out-the-vote efforts if they want to win. They need to run better candidates.
On the national level, the Republicans in Congress have not delivered. Trump has been excessively preoccupied with foreign wars in which we have no national interest. They all need to unite in passing good legislation and attending to America First. And they need to sharply restrict foreign immigration, legal and illegal, because the huge influx of foreigners with their voting behavior is changing the country in nefarious ways.
Otherwise, the congressional elections next year are going to be a bloodbath for Republicans, because the socialists are organized and motivated.
Overall a very disappointing night. I think the GOP will, or should mount a better grass roots campaign in 2026.
Yes, it was disappointing, Fred. There were bitter recriminations in NJ and VA. Many blamed Youngkin for steering the nomination to Winsome-Sears; and they blamed the candidate for dissing Trump. In NJ, they blamed the consultant/ Christie crowd for keeping Trump out of the race and for suppressing turnout among the Trump/ GOP base. Some blamed Sliwa for not getting out of the race; and others blamed Cuomo for a terrible campaign that was run.
It’s not often I quote MTG but she hit this one square on the head:
“Politics is no different than business. Business 101: If you don’t deliver what you promise, then don’t expect return customers.”
Great quote, David. Republicans next year ought to beware; and they need to deliver– both in Washington and in Raleigh.
