NC Political Tea has an article that discusses nonprofit hospital systems behaving like large for-profit corporations. This is a theme we have discussed at this blog occasionally.
She links to an article at the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal that suggests politicians from both parties are concerned. Indeed, they should be, given the fact that it was politicians who created the problem with the various laws they have enacted over the years. The allegation is that the hospital systems “abuse their tax-exempt status to enrich their executives, engage in real-estate speculation, and extort people seeking affordable careāall while raking in millions in donations”.
And yes, they do.
It borders on criminal activity, if has not already crossed that fine line.
That’s a great point, Fred. There is certainly a massive betrayal of the public trust.
