Now that it seems more clear that Roy Cooper will be running on the socialist side, it becomes much more compelling to determine who the GOP nominee will be.
Politico is reporting that Lara Trump has opted not to run; and that Trump will be throwing his support behind Michael Whatley. Spectrum 1 News says it has confirmed Whatley’s candidacy.
Whatley is the former NC GOP chairman who later became chairman of the Republican National Committee.
I have some concerns about this.
First, Whatley is untested as a candidate for a high-profile office as far as I know. He would be running for one of the most hotly contested seats in the country.
Second, the NC GOP has been an establishment haven where some filthy actions have been taken over the years to prevent conservatives from attaining leadership.
Third, there is no track record or voting record to predict how he would vote in the Senate.
I hope Politico got this wrong, but I suspect it has not.
Trump does not want to endorse another loser like Mark Robinson, At least I hope not.
I expect Whatley might seem like a safe choice to Trump, Fred. And obviously he feels that Whatley is on his team.
But it would be good to know how he would vote in office, and what he would be all about…
