It was truly unfortunate that Trump endorsed Whatley thereby shutting off the prospect for a legitimate GOP primary in North Carolina for the US Senate seat. Now, much of the establishment GOP funding of Whatley’s campaign is evaporating. Trump endorsed him based on perceived loyalty.
The Daily Haymaker names five individuals who might have turned out to be better candidates:
Who could have done better than Whatley? I’m not sure about the level of interest out there, but I can name a few: Dan Bishop, Garland Tucker, Mark Harris, Brad Knott, and Pat Harrigan. Each of them has a lot more substance to them than Michigan Mike does.
Knott, Harrigan and Harris are all relatively new GOP congressmen from North Carolina. Bishop is now US Attorney for our region but previously was a North Carolina Senator. All four are pretty solid conservatives who have done a good job in their respective roles. Harris is the former pastor of Charlotte’s First Baptist Church.
Tucker is the fellow who was going to challenge Thom Tillis in a primary six years ago, but Trump shot down the prospects of his candidacy, thereby assuring Tillis a smooth path to the nomination. Now, Tillis is literally cursing Trump.
We needed to have the strongest possible candidate to oppose Roy Cooper, but that was not allowed to happen.
