The Triad Business Journal is reporting that the PGA is changing its tournament line-up and packaging. This change will entail some tournaments being designated as part of its “Championship” series; and others as part of its lesser “Challenger” series.
The news being reported is that the Greensboro event will be part of the “Championship” series. In addition, Raymond James– a brokerage firm– will be the new lead sponsor replacing Wyndham.
The implications of Greensboro being designated as part of the Championship series is that the tournament will be perceived as more important and prestigious; and better golfers will feel more compelled to participate. In the recent past, some of the highest ranked professional golfers have skipped the Wyndham tournament.
If this report is true, it is a reflection of the fact that the PGA tour overall tends to appreciate its stop in Greensboro. The tournament organizers and volunteers make the tournament extremely hospitable and welcoming and accommodating. Even Jim Nantz on CBS speaks with more than his usual praise for the experience in Greensboro.
The state threw in some taxpayer money to help seal the deal.
Update: The News and Record is now also reporting the story.
Good for Greensboro. Big time now. (-:
Part of the formula, Fred, was putting southern hospitality at the forefront. Otherwise, there are much bigger places to go.
Incidentally, a PGA tour event on Long Island this year was associated with attendees shouting abusive remarks at players. There is discussion they might not go there again.
