Another question: are these concerns real, or do they represent alarmism?

I HAVE RECENTLY READ ABOUT AI’s GOING ROUGE . I OCASSIOANLY USE CHATGBT ON ESSENTIALLY MUNDANE QUESTIONS AND HAVE BEEN SATISFIED WITH THE RESULTS.
IS AI A THREAT TO TO THE WORLD ? I THINK A LOT OF THE NOISE OVER AI IS ALARMISM.
THIS DEBATE OVER AI SPLITS EXPERTS BETWEEN THOSE FEARING A RUNAWAY , UNCONTROLLABLE SUPERINTRLLIGENCE AND THOSE ARGUING THAT THE CURRENT SYSTEMS ARE JUST SOPHISTICATED STATISTICAL TOOLS DRIVEN BY HUMAN AND CORPORATE CHOICES.
A RECENT REPORT BY AN INDEPENDENT GROUP OF SCIENTISTS COMMISSIONED BY THE US DEFENSE DEPT ARGUES THAT THE INCREASINGLY IMPRESSIVE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE ARE In NO WAY A THREAT TO HUMANITY AS SOME PROMINENT FIGURES HAVE RECENTLY SUGGESTED.
A LOT OF US WON’T BE AROUND TO SEE IT.
SUCH IS LIFE.
I think we are already seeing it, Fred. There have already been job losses. The level of technology we have now would have been unimaginable even 30-40 years ago. Enormous funds have been invested. Will it pay off, or will it be mostly lost? Will people have productive work to do that will enable them to support themselves and their families? Will these data centers be a liability for all of us? So many questions.
But the issue of the technology going rogue is just… bizarre. Hard to understand the implications.
