I had the opportunity to visit the American Museum of Natural History in New York on Saturday. The museum has a theater that it used to project live video from the FIFA soccer tournament. It used this as an attraction to entice people to visit the museum where a “watch party” would be held.
After touring the museum, I sat down in the theater. Canada was playing Morocco. I was expecting more Canadian fans because New York is much closer to Canada geographically than to Morocco.
I was wrong about that. There was a large contingent of Muslim attendees at the theater, and they cheered wildly– repeatedly– for the Moroccan team. It was pretty sobering.
I don’t know if all of those people were of Moroccan descent– but somehow, I doubt it. My suspicion is that they were fellow Muslims who were cheering for the team of a Muslim country over that of Canada.
Three cheers for the red, white and blue.
Sadly we learn that the USA team was eliminated by losing to Belgium . Not even close.
It’s just a sport and the world will not end because of this loss.
Wait till next time.
I saw someone explain this morning, Fred, that our best athletes go into other sports. Soccer does not get our best necessarily.
