An article by Joe Killian at the Greensboro Thread makes the case that the members of the Greensboro City Council were victimized by Republicans in the state General Assembly; and that they had little choice but to raise taxes. Recall they had raised property taxes by 19% and water/sewer rates by approximately 11%. He relates how everything costs more now, and the city council members just HAD to raise taxes.
It’s pretty stereotypical. A lefty publication assertively defends the socialists. What else is new?
Of course, we had learned from George Hartzman that 57% of the increased revenues were going to be spent on more compensation for city employees. That group in aggregate represents an interest group that the city council represents to a much greater extent than it represents taxpayers. These council members, in aggregate, represent the public sector and take from the private sector.
That is what we have.
I have crossed swords with Joe Killian back to when he was a student at UNCG and later when he was a reporter for the N&R.
I always knew he was left leaning but respected his work although disagreeing with it. But this piece of journalism is beyond the pale.
TC, you and the hard working taxpayers of Greensboro and Guilford County are caught a trap. The only way out is that certain districts of the city secede. Is that even possible ?
It ought to be possible, Fred, but I don’t know how that would happen. I’d love to be part of Rockingham or Alamance or Randolph or Davidson counties…
