Comparing The Local Response To The Knicks’ and Hurricanes’ Victories

It was a great time watching the NBA and Stanley Cup Finals over the last week or so. Over the weekend, the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Knicks clinched their respective championships.

The Knicks’ games in New York were fairly dazzling with multiple celebrities in attendance and with “the Gah-den’s” electric atmosphere. The team itself actually has some players that display integrity and/or Christian witness. It is not the usual collection of NBA thugs.

But the reality outside the arena was quite different. Multiple sites were set up throughout the city where the games were projected onto screens or the sides of buildings. Tens of thousands gathered outside to celebrate. But things went awry in some locations where rioting took place. Vehicles and school buses were vandalized or set on fire. Over sixty were arrested.

Here in North Carolina, there was some wholesome celebration at the Lenovo Center where fans gathered to watch the game remotely from Las Vegas. But I did not see a single report of rioting or arrests.

This explains part of the reason so many– including myself– have relocated from the New York metro area to the Carolinas. While we are not free of crime here, the level of disorder in the various blue states is much higher. Thank goodness for North Carolina.
