Socialist Council Members Call For Budget Cuts In Greensboro

The ongoing saga regarding property tax revaluations has led to an occurrence we don’t see often.

Several Greensboro City Council members called for budget cuts to alleviate anticipated property tax increases due to revaluations.

Greensboro News and Record:

During a budget work session on Thursday, some council members said they wanted to find ways to ease the burden on residents.

“I don’t think we’re going to be revenue-neutral, but I think coming down a little bit more. We have to consider that for what we are asking for our community,” Councilman Adam Marshall said while also noting factors like higher gas prices that residents are facing.

Marshall added, “We need to consider areas where we can make some cuts.”

Councilwoman Tammi Thurm agreed.

“Yeah, where can we tighten our belt?” she said…

Council members discussed ways to reduce budget costs.

Councilwoman April Parker suggested phasing out performance increases for upper management and higher-earning employees…

Mayor Pro Tem Denise Turner Roth, who said in a recent Facebook post that she was asking city staff “to identify additional opportunities for reductions or efficiencies” and to “review whether certain spending increases can be phased in more gradually,” brought up the use of Artificial Intelligence to cut costs in certain areas.

George Hartzman has reported elsewhere that lower priced homes in Greensboro will be subject to property tax increases of upwards of 100 percent or more. It is apparent that the effect of property revaluations on local black homeowners and lower middle class/ working class/ elderly homeowners is forcing the city council to seek efficiencies. That does not mean, however, they will not increase our taxes and fees. They almost certainly will.
