I have fond memories of Senator Jesse Helms railing against Food Stamps. An opponent of the Food Stamp Program, Helms had already voted to reduce its scope, and was determined to follow this through as Agriculture Committee chairman. At one point, he proposed a 40% cut in their funding. Instead, Helms supported the replacement of food stamps with workfare.
Currently limited data has already uncovered significant misuse, including 186,000 deceased individuals receiving benefits and about 500,000 people collecting SNAP assistance in more than one state.
Today approximately 40 million Americans are SNAP recipients.
The program is rife with fraud which is a bite out of our paychecks.
It is amazing also, Fred, how the culture has changed. Now, the grocery stores actively market to and strain to demonstrate they welcome and accommodate food stamp recipients.
