These folks are inappropriately attempting to pressure the city council to pick their favorite candidate based on racial identity politics considerations. They want a police chief who will not conscientiously fight crime in black areas. But they paradoxically mouth concern about murders of young black males while simultaneously undermining law enforcement. The media allows them to pull off this inconsistency without challenge.
The candidate chosen is originally from Pakistan. Press reports have not commented as to whether he is Muslim. There is reason for concern regarding this choice, but the crowd at the city council meeting last night has precisely the wrong motivations.
The News and Record has embarrassed itself with the editorial published on
April 3. The editorial along with the crowd that wanted another applicant to get the job and still won’t shut up even after the Chief of Police was appointed. Sore losers don’t encourage trust.
