Christianity has been used to justify socialism for many years. The emphasis of self-sacrifice as the definition of virtue over the over the commandments against lying and stealing is part of the problem. Sacrifice of something of greater value (me) for something of lesser value to me (you) is a philosophical snake pit.
I would argue, J. Sobran, that this is an unbalanced representation of biblical teaching. In fact, there is virtually nothing I can recall that suggests the government must take money from some to redistribute to others. But there is plenty of teaching about sloth, work, being productive, charity, etc.
