Shutting down Orthodox churches and arresting priests doesn’t seem very democratic. I guess it is okay, as long as it is Christians you are abusing.
But using press gangs to round up conscripts [aka, slaves] for your army doesn’t seem democratic either. Or arresting any journalists who aren’t paid by the CIA to report propaganda. Nor not holding elections (which Lincoln did during his war). Oh but that’s right…all his Zelensky’s political opposition is in jail.
Mandatory conscription is not unusual and has obviously been used in the United States in the past, J. Sobran. Of course, the Ukrainian men forced into military service are the victims of this war because they are pawns used by larger globalist forces (including the Obama administration) that manipulated circumstances in Ukraine and in eastern Europe.
But the other things you mentioned — shutting down churches, arresting priests, arresting journalists, not holding elections, arresting political opposition… these are all indefensible because the entire pretense for this war is that we need to support Ukraine because it is a “democracy”, the governance and political system of which are superior to those in Russia. In some respects, however, the control of this country is being used, at least theoretically, to protect other countries in Europe. These claims are all very questionable, of course.
“Mandatory conscription is not unusual and has obviously been used in the United States…” Of course, even by Yankees fighting Lincoln’s War, putatively to end slavery.
But think what an evil form of slavery it is. You are forced to kill other people (total strangers) because some corrupt politician told you to. Never mind that your religion says “Thou shalt not kill.” To break God’s most fundamental commandment.
The US has used slave armies to fight numerous wars of choice. Not once has the US been vulnerable to attack. (Hawaii was a colony, and Pearl Harbor was manipulated into happening by FDR.) The precedent of evil does not make it okay.
You make some good points. Many of our wars have been wars of choice, as you say. You make a good case there should be no mandatory conscription for wars of choice.
What if there is no real choice? What if you are attacked without provocation, and the choice is fight or surrender your entire country to your adversary? I don’t think that was really the case in Ukraine, but it can be in other circumstances.
To provoke a war is to make it a war of choice, of course. Arguably, both the Civil War and WWII were provoked.
“Arguably, both the Civil War and WWII were provoked.” Triad I wish people were more aware of how true that is.
Fort Sumpter was a tripwire (in Charleston harbor no less–not like an invasion of the North) disallowing an amicable divorce.
And FDR was doing everything he could to provoke both the Germans and the Japanese to attack. He even had the US Navy attack German submarines, who didn’t take the bait. The US economic war on Japan shut them off from oil critically. And then there is overwhelming evidence that FDR knew of Pearl Harbor well before hand via the Japanese code having been broken.
I didn’t know about the Navy attacking German submarines before Pearl Harbor, J. Sobran.
The West provoked the Ukraine/ Russia war.
There are too many Nazis and too much corruption in Ukraine . let’s hope this thing get’s settled.
I agree, Fred. But it appears all the Greater Forces have preordained the war will continue.
Wouldn’t it be great if they deposed Zelensky?
