The Senator We Could Have Had

Some might recall that a gentleman named Garland Tucker was considering a challenge to Thom Tillis for the Republican nomination for the 2020 U.S. Senate race.

We learned that Tucker was a wealthy gentleman who would be able to finance his own campaign. Also, he was a consistent conservative, unlike Tillis.

The North State Journal published a piece by Tucker within the last couple of weeks. He made the case that Robert E. Lee was a great man who did not deserve being cancelled by the woke left. He has written other good things over the years.

The fact he was willing to write this particular piece is an indication that, yes, he is a conservative, but also that he possesses some measure of courage.

His candidacy for Senate was killed instantaneously when Trump announced his endorsement of Tillis.

  1. He sounds like the kind of man we need in the Senate. Do you think he will run ? Is there any other Republican who has expressed an interest in the job ?

  2. Fred, I have not heard any indication that he is planning a run this time. There are at least a couple who have announced they are running; and with Tillis dropping out, there are at least a few others who have been discussed. And Lara Trump is the elephant in the room.

  3. I remember Garland Tucker well. I heard him speak at HPU, having read his 2 books, one about the election of 1924 and the other…Conservative Heroes: Fourteen Leaders Who Shaped America, from Jefferson to Reagan, which included a chapter about NC’s Nathaniel Macon (in whom I have a special interest). I share his interest in history.

But I remember when he ran thinking him too intellectual, too gentle a personality for that dirty business. And Tillis’ attacks were dirty. Trump can be pretty stupid in picking people sometimes. Tillis, Michael Cohen, Bill Barr, Christopher Wray, Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Mike Pence… While rejecting people with integrity like Thomas Massie and Rand Paul and Garland Tucker.
