Liberal Republican Senator Tells SBC Church Must Water Down Message To Appeal To Democrats

A panel discussion at the Southern Baptist Convention addressed the matter of the church adopting “anger culture” regarding politics. Of course, it was led by Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) director Brent Leatherwood.

James Lankford, a liberal Republican Senator from Oklahoma who has repeatedly pushed amnesty for illegals, takes the position that the church must water down its message to appeal to Democrats. This, of course, is the same position taken by J.D. Greear and some pastors.

Another panelist asserted that scriptural messages clearly intended for individuals in their daily walk must be applied to government.

The big message? The church must not wade into politics even when scriptural teachings provide clear guidance and, in fact, a beacon; and government cannot serve the role God intended for it.

When Leatherwood gave Lankford a platform at the SBC, he was making a political statement. Prior to his leading the ERLC, he was an anti-Trump Republican in the state of Tennessee.
