When I heard the new American pope’s surname– Prevost– I was unsure from where it originated, and what his ethnicity might be.
Wikipedia provides some guidance. It states he has some African, French, Spanish and Italian ancestry. His father’s original family name was Riggitano. His mother was “mixed race” with a Martinez surname and a partial Creole background. I don’t know exactly how the “African” enters the picture.
The Italian-American organizations are claiming him as one of their own.
Pretty wild.

Hybrid vitality, Fred?
There is apparently some mess in his family background, above and beyond the mixed ancestry. Won’t get into that.
Creole could explain that – a mix of French and African at its roots.
Oh, OK, Jan. That helps fill in the blanks. Thanks!
