… and the Southern Baptist Convention’s role:
Several months ago, many people saw the Real David Platt Documentary (part 1 and part 2) that revealed how the non-denominational McLean Bible Church in northern Virginia was taken over and completely transformed in a destructive manner; and how various unethical moves took place. This was a large, vibrant, theologically orthodox evangelical church prior to Platt’s arrival.
And yes, it is possible for a church to be hijacked. It unfortunately happens.
Now, an article published by the Center for Baptist Leadership makes the case that the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board was a major part of what transpired at McLean Bible Church. There apparently were agendas being implemented.
The Southern Baptist Convention meets next month in Texas. Among the items to be raised reportedly will include financial accountability of the Convention and its various entities; the Ethics and Religious Liberty Coalition; and female pastors. It will be interesting to see what happens.
I saw it happen to a Methodist church I attended.
It’s all too common, unfortunately, Fred. And it can have different appearances in different places.
In medicine, the “hand-off”– i.e. transferring the care of a patient from one to another– can be muffed badly. It can happen with churches also. Transitions can be precarious.
