It was announced this week that Greensboro resident Louis DeJoy, who had been Postmaster General in Washington, abruptly resigned. The Triad Business Journal reported it might have been because of issues with DOGE.
DeJoy and his wife, Dr. Aldona Wos, have been GOP megadonors for many years.
DeJoy was initially appointed by Trump during his first term. During the time he has served as Postmaster General, I have noticed the following:
- Mail delivery has been much more unreliable;
- The quality of Postal Service employees is much lower than it had been, and the organization is much more “diverse”; and
- Fraud via interception of mailed checks has increased dramatically.
I myself have been a victim of fraud to the tune of thousands of dollars. Bad actors have discovered that they can alter intercept mailed checks and alter them by using a bleaching technique. Some of these bad actors work within the Postal Service. I had one incident during which I was able to conclude with virtual certainty that a Postal Service employee had intercepted a check I had mailed, and cashed it in a fraudulent manner.
I don’t know to what extent we can blame DeJoy for the decline of the Postal Service. But it certainly hasn’t improved over the last six or so years he has led the organization.
Sorry you were the victim
My oldest daughter works for the Fairfax Couny, VA police dept. ( as a civilian fraud investigator she; retired as a sworn Detective ). Anyway she tells me about all the swindles she handles. You wouldn’t believe some of them. The technique where you were taken is one of many clever ones.
Thanks, Fred. I am pretty convinced some of this is happening within the Postal Service. But yes, there is a variety of frauds and swindles out there, and sometimes the crooks know who to target.
Well, the USPS did lose $9.5 BILLION dollars last year, so there’s that…
I also have suffered bad PO service. Mailed plants that took 7 weeks to arrive (High Point to Louisiana) and so dead.
Having said that, I know someone who worked under DeJoy directly and said he was a good administrator, tough but honest. The PO is an unwieldy beast with too many of the dynamics of government about it; fully privatize it.
Thanks, J.Sobran. I agree– privatization seems to be the best route.
