Interesting Raleigh Bill On Kids’ Exposure To Social Media

Occasionally, we will see a bill introduced in the General Assembly that represents such enormous common sense that it might have little chance of surviving.

This might accurately characterize House Bill 301 that would ban kids less than 14 years old from having a social media account; and require parental consent for those age 14 and 15.

Is such a bill necessary? Yes. Children and teens are harmed by social media in various ways. And parents sometimes do not adequately supervise their kids– or they might lack the intestinal fortitude and wisdom to set limits. Such a bill would remedy parental failure on these matters.

Even if the bill were to pass, the social media companies would likely fight it intensely in court.

But getting all Republicans to agree on this measure, and override an anticipated Stein veto, seems unlikely. Indeed, it might not even make it past the committee stage.
