I had seen reported at a couple of sites, at least, that the legislation requires more businesses to turn over electronic information on their customers to the federal government.

That was how it was initially represented years ago, Fred. However, as you know, the FBI and the DOJ has abused their FISA authority, so all bets are off at this point.
