Yes, the passage of time made many people forget– and some who were aware had passed away by the time 2020 rolled around. But it was Obama who identified him as a “credible” foreign policy person who would complement his weakness in this area. Once he became vice-president, he was an instant potential presidential candidate, and all was forgotten.
