While I have not liked much of what Brad Briner has brought to the state treasurer’s office, he is absolutely right on this one.
One of our state’s many corrupt hospital systems– Atrium– devised a plan whereby it would waive co-pays and deductibles for folks covered by the State Health Plan so it could overcharge the state prolifically on the vast majority of expensive services.
Most insurance contracts with providers do not permit this type of activity. The contract requires you to collect these amounts. It is generally part of the overall “deal”.
So Briner is taking Atrium to court; and the first hearing occurs tomorrow. Pass the popcorn.
Briner is not only correct to initiate this litigation. As a fiduciary for the State Health Plan and the state’s taxpayers, he is nearly obliged to do so.
