Carolina Journal has a good article outlining the four men who are vying to become the new Senate President Pro Tempore to replace Phil Berger. These include Brent Jackson, Michael Lee, Ralph Hise and Todd Johnson.
All four of them score a “D” on the New American Freedom Index rating scale.
When the Republicans took control of the General Assembly fifteen years ago, some strong conservatives were part of the NC Senate Republican caucus. I am not sure that is true any longer. While some good legislation has been passed during recent years, there have also been some spectacular failures.
The NC Senate Republicans used to be more conservative than the NC House Republicans. Now, the House caucus appears to be more conservative.
To a certain extent, the Senate leader is going to be a reflection of his caucus. He cannot take them where they are unwilling to go.
Another issue is how many seats the NC General Assembly Republicans will lose with the election next month.
I am not a big fan of Ralph Hise. However, I am not sure if his opponents represent an improvement over what he would offer.
