Two interesting articles appeared on the News and Record website over the last week.
The first attempts to relate our recent hot summer in the Piedmont Triad to man-made climate change. It is written by someone who is funded by the lefty Reynolds Foundation. The article has been showing up on the website for a week.
The pronouncement in the article?
Human-caused climate change significantly altered daily temperatures for billions of people between June and August 2026, according to a global analysis by Climate Central.
The use of the word “significantly” is a trick. Human caused climate change is only a tiny portion of the climate change of that which is occurring. But because it is discrete and measurable, it can be described as “significant”.
The article employs deception. It fails to recognize that climate change is overwhelmingly caused by factors unrelated to human activities. And it tries to use one particular hot summer– likely a result of random variation from year to year– to create the appearance that human sources are the culprit.
The second article discusses a Confederate group that was demonstrating outside a meeting of socialists in Greensboro. It characterized the group as “right wing nuts” in the lead sentence. It later referred to them as “white nationalist”.
It is completely inappropriate for journalists to use derisive terms to refer to citizens. But of greater significance is the fact that the News and Record NEVER employs comparably negative labels to describe left-wing groups. The derision is selective.
Some in the past have stated they use the print copy of the News and Record to line their bird cage– or as toilet paper. There are not many print copies out there these days. It would be wonderful if more worthy daily reporting could emerge in the Triad to replace the News and Record.
