Readers will perhaps recall the saga of the parking garage for which Randall Kaplan– the husband of former Congresswoman Kathy Manning– sought public funding. They have been longtime political donors and insiders. It was Kaplan’s vision to build a downtown hotel and to have the city taxpayers pay for its attached parking garage.
An excellent article by Ian McDonald at Yes!Weekly reveals that serious hazardous conditions have been identified at the construction site. The city did not even know it was their responsibility when he contacted them about it.
He also describes how the project ballooned from an initial request by Kaplan for $1.9 million from the taxpayers to approximately $43 million.
This is an illustration of how corrupt machine politics works.
