Readers might recall that Greensboro’s city attorney is reported recently to have issued a verbal threat against a local community activist by telephone.
This city attorney– Lora Cubbage– is a former judge. Therefore, she has been an elected official in the past. She also happens to be a black woman.

The first reminds us about some ethics investigations in which Cubbage had some level of involvement that raised questions. There were also questions about the handling of the recently passed city budget; public records requests; and a combative approach her office had adopted.
This all was happening when the city’s communication director– Amanda Lehmert– abrupted separated from the city. Around the same time frame, there was an effort to prevent a local activist from appearing on a local TV news program.
Hartzman adroitly analyzed the vague nature of the mayor’s statement that a city employee’s safety was being endangered. See the article for details.
The second raises the question as to whether the entire city council voted to approve the mayor’s statement given the fact she said she had the city council’s support.
My question is whether Cubbage’s position is being protected and shielded politically. And if so, is it because she is protecting certain city officials’ prerogatives to remain unaccountable against local activists who express concern? Or is it because of the overarching influence of the black PAC’s over our city government? Or is it both?
