While I have not been a soccer fan, I have been watching the FIFA World Cup series with some degree of fascination.
Why?
First, it has been a huge, entertaining spectacle to see huge hordes of foreigners flock to American football stadiums to cheer their home teams.
Second, the social media phenomenon of large numbers of Europeans and others experiencing American food, service, retail establishments, hospitality and travel has been very entertaining. Their exclamations of delight have been entirely unexpected.
Why has that happened? Perhaps it is the novelty. Many of us have experienced this as we travel elsewhere. Perhaps they are trying to earn more clicks. But there is no question that the United States is a very special place with some very cool aspects that merit the praise of foreigners and locals alike. We ought to be thankful for what we have.
Another thing I have found surprising is the large numbers of people from countries we would have regarded as poor having the resources to engage in prolonged foreign travel. We thought they were third world countries! But here they are.
I wonder how many of these European travelers are going to want to immigrate to the United States particularly after their own leaders have ruined their respective countries back home.
I have zero interest interest in Soccer. ( same for ice hockey ). If the world cup brings good fortune to local economies , that would be fine.
I hope those visitors were thoroughly vetted.
I somehow doubt it, Fred. But there is little doubt there has been a huge crush of people from foreign countries attending these games in multiple cities.
