Proposed Dominion Energy/ NextEra Energy Merger

Dominion Energy, an electric utility based in Virginia, serves some eastern North Carolina electrical customers. It is being proposed to merge with NextEra Energy based in Florida.

NextEra is widely known for embracing and eagerly pursuing green energy alternatives. It is much larger than Dominion and would have the upper hand in the merger.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission must approve the merger. I doubt it would be in the best interests of North Carolina residents.

  1. I worked for Carolina Power & Light for a short time, in the early 60’s. It was later absorbed by Duke Energy. I don’t know if that merger was in the best interest of North Carolina residents?

    1. Fred, given the fact there is virtually no competition in the electric utilities sector, the issue of competition is obviously moot. However, I don’t know what impact it had on rates for Carolina Power and Light (later Progress Energy) customers.

I don’t like the idea that NextEra has been so passionate about pursuing green energy.
