The Rhino Times interviews Register of Deeds Jeff Thigpen who informs us that preliminary data suggest we have corporate ownership of 2,911 single homes in Guilford County. I don’t know whether that number includes houses only, or if townhomes/ condos are also part of the mix.
Thigpen says we need better data, thereby suggesting there may be more to the story.
But that initial number he shares raises concern. Remain mindful the county has only approximately 559,000 residents according to 2024 Census estimates. That means 2,911 homes is a very significant chunk of the single homes in the county.
The preliminary data suggests we have a problem. We ought not have any corporate-owned single homes.
How on earth are ” they ” going to make free trade illegal ? Perhaps with some monopolistic law already on the books. I dunno.
I strongly doubt this is something that could be regulated at the county level, Fred. My suspicion is that action would be needed in Raleigh.
